The Healing Power of Touch
Touch is a fundamental need. Humans hug in times of grief or anxiety as well as in times of joy and happiness. Babies who are held and lovingly touched thrive and grow. Touch can heal the ill and fortify the weak. Sadly, touch is often neglected in today's fast-paced world. We often refrain from entering each other's personal space or become inhibited from open displays of emotion or reaching out to physically communicate comfort and companionship.
Massage therapy is one of the oldest methods of healing through touch. Hippocrates referenced massage in the 4th century B.C. when he wrote, "...the physician must be acquainted with many things...and most assuredly with rubbing." Today, massage is practiced world-wide and there are modalities of bodywork suitable for almost any client.
As a licensed massage therapist and Reiki practitioner, I believe that touch can provide solace that is more than skin deep. Therapeutic massage and Reiki are just two of the many alternative healing modalities that can offer you a respite from the inevitable challenges of life.
